Reasons for bathroom remodel cost variations

Despite the obvious costs associated with the square footage of your bathroom (more space means more tiling, paint, etc.), a major contributing factor to the total cost of your bathroom remodel will be your taste and the durability you’re looking for from your tiling, fixtures, vanity, bathtub, tub, shower head, faucets etc. Made-in-China plumbing is not the same price at those fancy Italian thermostatic faucets!

It can be tempting to save costs with a bathroom remodel by doing a lot of the work yourself, however, hiring a specialized bathroom contractor can provide you with huge advantages and may end up costing you less in the end.

Besides the high levels of knowledge, experience, advice and service quality you’re likely to get from a good contractor, they’ll keep the qualified sub-trades like electricians and plumbers to a strict schedule so your bathroom gets done on time. Being down a bathroom is a huge inconvenience, and we want to give it back to you as soon as possible.

Defining the scope of your bathroom makeover

Bathrooms tend to be one of the most commonly renovated rooms in the home due to their functionality and frequency of use. They will also be one of the most expensive rooms to renovate on a square-foot basis. So, consider the exact requirements for what you are looking to achieve to justify the budget you set.

Are you looking to gut the entire bathroom, replace all the tiling and fixtures, and potentially move plumbing to create better space? Or, are you simply wanting to replace the vanity, upgrade a few fixtures, re-paint and fix a few loose tiles? Either way, consider the potential return-on-investment.

Aside from adding to the resale value of your home, upgrading your bathroom seriously improves your quality of life – from relaxing baths to more space for a growing family. Either way, the bathroom should always be a room for comfort and one to be proud of.

Breaking down your budget for your bathroom remodel

Demolition

A complete gut-out with a wall removal should be handled by a pro, for no other reason than the risk of water damage. You can expect to pay on average around $1,500 for the complete demolition and clean-up of your bathroom.

Plumbing & Electrical work

This work requires licensed trades everywhere in Canada, which is what makes them so expensive ($70-$120 per hour). Pot lights will cost approximately an additional $250 each to supply and install. When hiring a contractor to look after the project, they will usually include the cost of sub-trades in their overall quote. Though, be sure to clarify that this is the case when signing any agreement.

Tiling

Tiling costs can vary significantly depending on the quality and style. While porcelain is slightly more expensive than ceramic at $5-$10/sq. ft., it’s easier to keep clean and more durable. It will usually end up costing less over time. Marble mosaics can range anywhere from $10 to $100/sq. ft. depending on the intricacy of the design. Installation costs tend to be between $5 and $15/sq. ft. depending on the complexity of the pattern.

Countertop

Natural or engineered stone is the most common material used for bathroom countertops. Depending on the grade, expect to pay anywhere from $50 to $200/sq. ft. for stone materials including installation. While wood is a less-common material due to its tendency to absorb moisture, some customers have gone this route and it turns out beautifully. Prices can vary considerably depending on the quality of wood, ranging anywhere from $30 to $150/sq. ft. not including installation. Any wood in the bathroom will generally need to be well-sealed to prevent deterioration.

Vanity

Your vanity will set the look and feel of your bathroom. A custom wood vanity is likely to run you at least $2,000, not including installation. There are several stock options available that can vary anywhere from $500 to $1,500, with an additional cost of somewhere between $300 and $600 for installation.

Labour costs

Aside from installation costs, which are often included in the materials quotes for things like tiling and fixtures, general labour costs to cover painting have to be calculated into your budget. For a mid-size bathroom, allow an additional $1,000 to $2,000 to cover these costs. However, make sure to check with the contractor that they’re specified as part of the initial quote. Also, labour pricing can vary considerably from contractor to contractor so it’s advisable to shop around and get comparative quotes. This isn’t to suggest that the cheapest quote is necessarily the one to choose, but it’s advisable to get an idea of the quality of their past work and experience to justify the price. Saving a few hundred dollars on labour costs could end up costing you far more if the work needs to be re-done. Take a look at questions you should ask contractors before hiring them.

Knowing the square footage of your bathroom will provide you with a better idea of how much you should budget for your bathroom renovation. Use a tape measure and write down your findings to get a rough estimate of the floor area. It’s best to over-shoot the estimated size so as to not fall short with your budget.
